The project

As part of a full renovation of their 1980s weatherboard home in Melbourne's outer north east, the Cooper family wanted to resurrect the original timber floors in the kitchen, living and dining areas.

"We had already re-painted the exterior of the home to give it a more contemporary feel. Tackling the internal timber floors was next on our list," explains homeowner Scott Cooper.

The Coopers wanted a gorgeous, long-wearing finish to complement the refreshed interiors of their home.

"Coatings durability was important for our family, which includes teenagers and a dog."

The challenge

The home's original Tasmanian oak floors had been coated with an epoxy that had yellowed significantly over the years.

"The floors were really quite orange, and also badly scuffed and marked after more than 40 years of use," Scott says.

A further challenge presented itself when the carpet in the living area was pulled up to reveal poorly laid pine. Fortunately, the Coopers managed to source matching Tasmanian oak boards from a nearby home demolition.

"Replacing the pine with the reclaimed Tasmanian oak meant we could achieve uniform timber flooring right through the living, dining, and kitchen areas. But it also meant a decision for us in terms of the look and product selection."

While the Coopers had been considering a dark timber stain, after consultation with their trusted floor sander, Tony from The Wooden Flooring Co, the couple decided to make the most of their Tasmanian oak by bringing out its natural beauty, highlighting colour and grain. The couple selected a matt finish to achieve a natural look that does not yellow over time.

The Intergrain solution

The Intergrain Enviropro product range was chosen for its ease of application, durability, quality, and low odour on the natural timber floors.

"To bring out the natural beauty of your timber and achieve a hard-wearing, long-lasting result, the Intergrain Enviropro range is ideal," Tony explains. "If you don't want the coatings to oxidise and go that orange yellow colour over time, it's the perfect solution."

After sanding, Tony applied a three-step process to the Cooper family's floors:

The benefit of Intergrain Enviropro Timberseal water-based is it reduces grain raise. This means no sanding is required between sealer and topcoat, saving time.

The fast-drying, low odour qualities of Intergrain Enviropro products meant Scott and his family only needed to be away from home for a couple of days while the coatings were being applied and cured.

"We were pleased that there was absolutely no smell when we returned home," says Scott.

The results

"We are really thrilled with our refurbished timber floors. The Enviropro finish accentuates the timber's natural beauty, colour and grain, making our floors a gorgeous feature of the home," Scott says.

"And after several months of constant use by the whole family and pets, the durability of the coating is evident – the floors still look as good as new."

For the floor sander Tony, the support he received from the Intergrain Trade and Industrial team makes working with and recommending the Intergrain Enviropro range a 'no brainer'.

"I really trust the Intergrain Enviropro range. I like that the products are locally made, for Australian timbers and Australian conditions," says Tony, who has more than 20 years' experience in timber floor finishing.

"I also value the excellent service and advice I get from my local rep," Tony says.
