The project

Previously coated in a solvent-based dark stain, the timber floors overwhelmed the open living area of this modern home. Additionally, the timber planks were cupping significantly, creating an uneven surface.

The challenge

Wanting to retain the original timber floors but have them refreshed to look lighter and more contemporary, the homeowner asked Andrew from First Choice Sanding to inspect the timber's condition. Andrew was confident he could sand the cupped flooring to an even and consistent surface, then apply a high-performance clear coating system that would restore the timber back to its natural unstained beauty, with the gorgeous wood grain highlighted.

The Enviropro solution

Professional floor sanders such as Andrew often consult Intergrain Trade & Industrial Technical Sales Executive, Pat Guarnaccia, to ensure they’re up to date with the latest technology in timber floor coatings. For this project, Pat confirmed that Andrew's product choice and action plan would deliver outstanding results.

Step 1: A moisture test was performed on the timber to ensure the cupping issue was unlikely to reoccur. Andrew then completed a deep sand to even the surface.

Step 2: After a nail punch, imperfection repair with a waterbased timber filler and a fine sand of the surface, Andrew vacuumed to remove all dust and surface contaminants. He then applied a coat of Intergrain Enviropro Timberseal Ultra to seal the timber

Step 3: The next day, Andrew completed a screenback and buff before vacuuming again. He then used a combination of brush and roller to apply two coats of Intergrain Enviropro Endure 1 Pack in Matt, with 4 hours drying timber between coats.

The results

The stunning refurbished floor finished in Intergrain Enviropro Endure 1 Pack Matt, has transformed this modern home, with the natural beauty of the timber now on show. Importantly, this non-yellowing, highly durable coating will resist scuffs, marks, dents and fading from UV exposure.

Both high performance coatings are waterbased, fast drying, low odour and offer lower VOC requirements to that of Greenstar maximum requirements for floor finishes. The home owner was thrilled with the results and happy they could move in to their home soon after application.

Pat tells homeowners they can walk on their new floors after 48 hours, but explains, "Full curing occurs after 7 to 14 days, so it's important to wear socks, use felt pads under furniture, and avoid any painting or trade work until the coating has fully cured."
