Sourcing high performance timber coatings locally saved both time and money on the construction of a spectacular timber-focused school building in Sydney.
The new Innovation Centre at Oakhill College in Sydney’s Castle Hill is a spectacular example of modern Australian architecture. From the very early planning stages, stakeholders in this project knew they were creating something special. The goal was to incorporate as much timber as possible, to connect the building to the natural world and provide students with an optimum learning environment. The 4300 sqm space houses classrooms, meeting areas, workshops and science labs.
BVN, the project’s architects, specified the use of prefabricated mass timber to meet construction deadlines, while retaining an uncompromising finish. The mass timber is comprised of European Spruce from Austria for the internal columns and beams, while the exterior is encased in locally sourced Victorian Ash. Full height glazing features on upper levels. Beyond the organic beauty of natural material, the extensive use of timber improves thermal efficiency and reduces environmental impact.
Dealing with a host of issues during construction, such as the impact of severe weather and supply chain issues associated with the latter stages of the COVID 19 pandemic, the main contractor required an efficient high-performance finishing solution to protect the timber and to provide easy maintenance.
With all these issues compounding on a daily basis, Chris Ryan of FDC Construction worked with applicators, Andrew Macpherson of APC Painters Intergrain T&I State Sales Manager, Noel Cumberland, lent his expertise to the project, providing valuable advice on preventing water ingress on the timber surface during extreme weather events.
After careful assessment, Noel specified Intergrain Universal Timber Oil for the exterior elements and Intergrain UltraDeck Timber Stain in a bespoke white tint for the interior components.
“We saved time and money for the main contractor by providing an efficient, locally tailored support package for preparation, colour and application making all of this available the next day”.
“The Intergrain products achieved the desired aesthetic result while providing high performance protection from UV exposure, weathering and abrasion,” Noel explains.
This project highlights the advantage of specifying high performance coatings that have been specifically formulated and manufactured in Australia for Australian conditions. Intergrain is proud to support the increasing use of timber in modern Australian design, proving coating solutions that boost the resilience and longevity of this sustainable building material.
