High gloss and deep red tones were making these dark floors overpower every room. The stunning new stain is both moody and modern, and has been enhanced and protected by our advanced timber coatings technology.
From the ornate wall panels and cornices to the crystal light fittings, this luxury home in Melbourne's leafy east is filled with charming decorative details. Details that were once overwhelmed by the dark red timber floors that dominated every room. The super glossy mahogany floors were looking outdated, out of place, and in desperate need of rescue.
The homeowners liked the elegance of dark floors, but they wanted to achieve a more subtle finish. They wanted the gloss and red tones gone and replaced with a simple ebony stain that would allow the timber’s natural grain to show through.
Andrew from First Choice Sanding met with the homeowners to assess the floors and confirmed that the existing finish was a solvent-based coating. Calling on the expert advice of Intergrain Trade & Industrial Technical Sales Executive Pat Guarnaccia, Andrew made a plan to remove the old coating and create a more modern look. He trialed seven different stain samples on a sanded section of the floors, with Feast Watson Prooftint in Black Japan proving to be the clear winner.
The transformation process involved:
• Deep sand to remove the old coating
• Nail punch and filling with waterbased timber filler
• Fine sanding and vacuum to remove all the dust and surface contaminants
• One coat of Feast Watson Prooftint in Black Japan with Reducer Tint base applied by brush and roller using a wipe on/wipe off method
• Next day - one coat of Intergrain Enviropro Invisible Floor Finish to seal the stain, followed one coat of Intergrain Enviropro Endure 2 Pack Matt applied by brush and roller
• Final day - After a screenback, buff and vacuum, a final coat of Intergrain Enviropro Endure 2 Pack Matt was applied.
