Many timber suppliers provide timber decking and components pre-oiled as the benefits in-store and on-site include:
Installing pre-oiled timber is often considered the best option for timber projects such as decking, fencing, screening and gates - but it could leave you questioning if pre-oiled timber still needs another topcoat to finish the job. Continue reading why we recommend a final coat and the best product to complete your project.
If you don't know what pre-oil has been used on your pre-oiled exterior timber, follow the below preparation steps before top coating:
Step 1: Ensure your new pre-oiled timber is clean and free from dust, dirt, debris, and mortar before coating.
Step 2: Treat the surface with Intergrain Tannin and Oil Remover, following the directions
Step 3: Clean with Intergrain UltraPrep Timber Cleaner, following the directions
Step 4: Allow the surface to dry thoroughly and perform a water absorption test
If your pre-oiled Timber has been coated with Intergrain Universal Oil, follow these steps before top coating:
Light surface soiling:
Step 1: All timber should be clean and free from dust, dirt and debris
Step 2: A light wipe with clean water and damp cloth will be suitable
Heavy surface soiling:
Step 1: Clean the surface with Intergrain UltraPrep Timber Cleaner following instructions. Rinse and allow the surface to dry thoroughly before top-coating
When choosing a topcoat, the preferred finish best determines the most suitable product. A transparent oil, such as Intergrain Universal Oil, is recommended to maintain or highlight the natural appearance of the timber.
For longer-lasting protection, Intergrain lightly pigmented UltraDeck Timber Oil* is recommended. To transform the colour of the timber, a semi-transparent stain such as Intergrain UltraDeck Timber Stain* will impart a deeper colour whilst allowing the timber grain to show through.
