The project

Dark stained timber floors can look bold and dramatic, but they don't suit every space. That was the case with a compact lounge area in this Sydney home, where the dark floors were overwhelming the small space. The owners wanted to have their mixed Karri hardwood floors sanded back and restored to their natural colour.

The challenge

After close inspection of the floors, Ruberlei of Resurface Flooring advised his clients the timber planks were in good condition and he was confident he could restore them to their natural shade. The clients wanted Ruberlei to use the very best products on the market to achieve the most premium finish. They also wanted a quick turnaround to minimise disruption to their busy lives.

The Intergrain solution

Experienced in the use of Enviropro timber floor coatings, Ruberlei contacted Intergrain Trade & Industrial Technical Sales Executive, Pat Guarnaccia to discuss the best coating system for this type of timber.

Pat recommended the following two-part system:

First coat: Intergrain Enviropro Timberseal Alcohol Based

Topcoat: Two coats of Intergrain Enviropro Endure 1 Pack Satin

"I often suggest a first coat of Intergrain Enviropro Timberseal Alcohol Based on tannin-rich or oily timbers to block any tannin leaching and minimise grain rise," Pat explains. "It's lower in odour than traditional solvent based sealers, with more than 80% of the formula made from sustainably sourced ingredients."

"I recommended a topcoat of Intergrain Enviropro Endure 1 Pack Satin because the water based formula is fast drying, non-yellowing and highly durable. The slight sheen on the finish adds warmth and helps reduce the reduce the visibility of dust and other surface imperfections."

The rejuvenation process involved:

Sanding the floors, including nail punch

              Filling with waterbased timber filler

              Fine sanding and vacuuming

Applying Intergrain Enviropro Timberseal Alcohol Based using brush/roller combination

Once dry, applying a first coat of Intergrain Enviropro Endure 1 Pack Satin on the same day

Next day, a light ‘cut back’ or abrasion of the surface and vacuum

              Final top coat applied

The results

The clients were thrilled with the transformation of their floors. The lighter, natural finish has added organic warmth to the room, making it feel more spacious and inviting. The fast drying finish meant they only needed to vacate the property for four days, with furniture returned after just two days.

Fast drying, low odour and Green Building compliant, Enviropro water based coatings are preferred by professional applicators because they are so easy to work with. This two-step system showcases the timber's natural beauty and provides a highly durable protective coating for long term good looks.
