A specialist sports coating solution gave this expansive gym floor the good looks and durability needed for heavy use. Vibrant line markings and natural wood tones are protected with a clear, gloss finish.
The Gallipoli Barracks in Enoggera, just outside of Brisbane, is home to more than 7000 Australian Defence Force Personnel. Health and fitness is a key focus on base, with an expansive 2000 sqm gymnasium floor in near constant use. Half the space is taken up by exercise bikes and other gym equipment, while the other half is used for basketball and other sports.
When the gym floors recently required refurbishment, the Base Manager reached out to Alyce at Architectural Panel Coatings for a quote on a high quality, long lasting solution that would keep the floors in top condition for longer.
"Sports courts need to be re-coated every five to ten years, depending on the level of use," explains Intergrain Trade & Industrial Business Development Executive, Simone Gillies. "This gym is a high traffic zone, with sweat, sunscreen and lotions embedding into the coating and into the timber over time, causing delamination and deterioration."
The floors needed a highly durable specialist coating for timber sports floors, one that would be easy to maintain, provide grip and resist scuffs and scratches. A fast turnaround was also a priority.
With a vast suite of finishing technologies and brands, Toby Aquamax Sport was selected as the most ideal system for this project. Simone teamed up with Intergrain Trade & Industrial Technical Sales Executive, Pat Guarnaccia to support Alyce with a tailored coatings system. Frank from Portugal Cork assisted with product supply and hands-on application expertise.
The process involved:
• Sanding the timber and filling with a water-based timber filler.
• Fine sanding and vacuuming to remove dust.
• Application of Toby GF Barrier Seal by brush and roller. This solvent based sealer is high build and fast drying, with excellent barrier and grain filling properties.
• Cut back and vacuuming, and waiting a day before linemarking with Dulux Aquanamel, a water based enamel that dries to a hard-wearing, chip-resistant finish.
• Cut back the next day and vacuuming.
• First top coat of waterbased Toby Aquamax Sport applied by brush and roller. Easy to apply, fast drying and low odour, this clear top coat is specially formulated for sports courts.
• Final top coat applied the following day.
The gym floors are now gleaming with a smooth, clear gloss finish that both protects and enhances the timber floors. Importantly, this highly durable coating will not dull or yellow over time.
"Toby Aquamax Sport delivers maximum durability and grip over the long term", Pat says. "Importantly, the non-yellowing properties ensure the surface maintains its new appearance for longer. Yellow tones are really ageing, and that's why, in this instance, the Toby system was the best choice for good looks that last."
Explaining why this project had such a satisfying outcome, Simone says, "Alyce and her family have been loyal Dulux customers for more than 25 years. Alyce's father, James, was also a floor sander and he preferred the Toby and Intergrain range for all his projects. It was rewarding to support a lovely family-owned business."
