The project

In one of the most pristine stretches of the Sunshine Coast is the small, but picture-perfect lifestyle development – Bokarina Beach. The master planned community is positioned between Caloundra and Mooloolaba. Today, the durable yet high-end finish of Intergrain's Universal Timber Oil is helping protect and beautify part of this stunning coastal precinct.

The Bokarina Beach development, spearheaded by Stockland, features multiple living options from apartments to freestanding beach homes. The Terraces are a series of high-end two and three storey homes, situated between the ocean beach and the shoreline of Lake Kawana. They were designed by HM Architecture and built by local South Queensland construction company McNab.

Award winning Australian Weathertex natural timber cladding panels were selected to bring a warm coastal aesthetic to the exterior of The Terraces. Intergrain Universal Timber Oil was chosen to protect and enhance this cladding.

The challenge

"The use of Weathertex 'natural fusion' cladding as an exterior finish on stages four and five of The Terraces created the perfect coastal aesthetic we were seeking," architect Garth Hollindale explains.

"The challenge was to find a coatings system that delivered a natural organic appearance across different colour palettes, and was also environmentally friendly."

Intergrain Trade & Industrial's Business Development Executive Simone Gillies met with Garth in the early stages of the project to provide a range of samples for consideration to match Garth's vision for an 'evolving aesthetic'.

The Intergrain solution

"Intergrain's Universal Timber Oil was specified as the final coatings finish for the 49 Terraces residences," Simone explains. "Two different colour stains – Coastal Grey and Roast Walnut – were chosen to meet Garth's requirement for providing definition and context between each terrace."

The Weathertex panels were thoroughly cleaned on site before a two-coat system was applied:

• Coat one: Intergrain Universal Timber Oil (Coastal Grey or Roast Walnut double strength)
• Coat two: Intergrain Universal Timber Oil (Coastal Grey or Roast Walnut double strength)

According to Garth, the Intergrain Universal Timber Oil system was selected for the Bokarina Beach Terraces project because:

  1. It has an organic and environmentally friendly formula - great for builders and owners
  2. It will evolve naturally with Weathertex's coastal characteristics
  3. The requirement for only two coats (instead of three as per competitors) was an attractive, cost-effective solution

"As a bonus, Intergrain Universal Timber Oil is an unlocked system, which means owners can apply their choice of oil based, or water-based coating over the top in future."

The results

Bailey Lawrie from Toowoomba based builders McNab echoes Garth's sentiments, saying Intergrain Universal Timber Oil delivered the exact result the team was seeking.

"The applicators loved working with an organic product," he says. "The combination of the Weathertex and the two different Intergrain Universal Timber Oil tints brought the architect's vision to life. It's a natural timber look and blends perfectly with the coastal setting of the Bokarina Beach development."

Bailey and Garth both complemented Simone's technical knowledge of the product and her application advice, specifying a finish that will stand up to the harsh coastal conditions, yet is gentle on the environment.
