The project

Built by Arden Homes, the minimalist design of this beach house allows the timber cladding to take centre stage. Specifying the right timber coating was essential to achieving the owner's vision of a rustic grey timber exterior perfectly suited to the coastal location in Portsea, Victoria.

The challenge

The homeowners wanted the external timber cladding to remain uncoated so it could weather naturally and 'silver' to a soft grey shade. The challenge is that exposed timber is also likely to split, cup and warp over time. Also, sheltered patches of timber cladding will retain their original colour for longer, with uncovered patches greying faster than the rest.

Applicators, Kustom Timbers, sought the expert advice of Intergrain Trade & Industrial Business Development Executive, Sean Thomas, so they could provide the owners with the best solution.

The Intergrain solution

Recommending two coats of Intergrain Universal Timber Oil tinted to Coastal Grey, Sean explained how this advanced formula would give the timber a fast track to the silvered look and a highly durable protective coating.

"Intergrain Universal Timber Oil penetrates the substrate to protect timber from the inside out. Adding the colour additive in Coastal Grey achieves the silvered look quickly, without the need to wait for nature to take its course. This solution also secures a consistent colour," Sean says.

The applicators followed this process:

1.           The timber was first treated with 80 litres of Intergrain UltraPrep Tannin & Oil Remover and cleaned with 30 litres of Intergrain UltraPrep Timber Cleaner.

2.           Next, 220 litres of Intergrain Universal Timber Oil was applied over two coats using decking oil applicators and decking brushes.

3.           The excess was then wiped off with a dry applicator pad and brush.

"Prompt customer service ensured we had sufficient product supply on site," Sean says. "The winter weather was a challenge, but we were able to keep the project on schedule."

The results

The homeowners are very happy with the timber’s natural matt finish, with the charming silver shade matching their original vision.

"The penetrating nature of Intergrain Universal Timber Oil means it won’t delaminate, making maintenance easier and quicker. Additionally, the unlocked system means the timber can be re-coated with any oil or water-based coating in the future," Sean says.

"This project shows it’s possible to achieve a natural grey look in quick time, as tannins can be removed and coatings applied within days."
