Coating: How to achieve a charred black finish on exterior timber

Black timber finishes have been gaining popularity in recent years due to their bold and timeless appearance, which seamlessly blends with the natural surroundings of Australian homes. Achieving the perfect charred finish, however, can be a bit challenging, as many paints mask the natural grain of the timber and few coatings can provide the depth of colour required. Enter Intergrain Charred Black Timber Stain. This water-based, penetrating stain is perfect for vertical timber surfaces and is guaranteed to provide the appearance of charred timber without peeling, flaking, or blistering.

How do I apply it?
  1. Following the instructions on the pack, prep your timber for coating with UltraPrep Tannin & Oil Remover and UltraPrep Timber Cleaner, depending on the condition of the timber.
  2. Allow the timber to dry for at least 1 hour before coating. Stir Charred Black Timber Stain thoroughly before and during use with a flat blade stirrer. This will help to ensure an even finish.
  3. Choose your application method. Note: Charred Black Timber Stain is not suitable to be applied using a roller.
  4. If applying Charred Black Timber Stain with a paintbrush, evenly coat the length of the timber in the direction of the grain.
  5. If applying as a spray (air assisted airless or airless), it's recommended to back brush to even out the finish and avoid spotting.
  6. Allow to dry for 3 hours before applying a second coat. If necessary, sand lightly between coats to remove any raised grain.
