Coronet Grove

Coronet Grove House is built on one of the most elevated seaside locations in a Melbourne bayside suburb. This suburb was established in the 1950’s and 60’s and has a heritage of experimental architecture from that period. The architect, Maddison Architects, responded to these traditions and orientation with a design which uses form and materials in a distinctively contemporary approach. The house was built by Master Builders, Atkinson Pontifex.

The house is broken into a northern alabaster concrete block wing and a southern cantilevered zinc portion. The northern, two storey wing, contains the pragmatic accommodation requirements of five bedrooms, three bathrooms, study and playroom, whilst the cantilevered zinc portion of the house as the aspirational living area which commands 270 degree views of Port Philip Bay. The intermediary parts that connect these two elements are clad in spotted gum shiplap boards. The spotted gum is also used on the decking and decorative elements including internal stair rails, cladding and external slab fencing.

As part of the brief from the client, was that the materials selected were to have minimal maintenance. All these elements have been treated using Intergrain timber finishes for the timbers longevity. The spotted gum deck was finished with Nature’s Timber Oil ‘Natural’ after being prepared with Reviva. The front fence was protected with UltraDeck ‘Natural’ and the spotted gum front and back entrance doors were finished in UltraClear Exterior ‘Satin’. The interior stair banister and cladding was protected by UltraClear Interior ‘Satin’. The Intergrain products were supplied by Paint Spot, Moorabbin. Content Separator
