The Cairns Esplanade Complex
The Cairns Esplanade Complex is the highlight of the Cairns foreshore precinct. The popular and bustling complex has kilometers of boardwalk, a swimming lagoon, a marina and The Pier shopping and restaurant complex. The Esplanade attracts thousands of local and international visitors each year.
The foreshore promenade, or boardwalk, features hardwood handrails, outdoor furniture and a boardwalk that require protection from the elements. Due to its location by the sea, the timber is highly exposed to salt, wind and sun.
The timber protection requirements for the handrails and outdoor furniture were very specific as it was necessary to have a high film build to fill the open end grain to prevent water ingress and any splintering issues with the timber. It was a particularly important requirement to coat the timber (instead of using a purely penetrating finish) to stop any splintering due to its role as a handrail.
The TriSheild System was selected, using DWD with a six monthly maintenance program due to the highly exposed nature of the site. DWD, when used as part of the TriShield System, provides a highly durable, water based transparent finish that provides excellent UV resistance and timber protection.
UltraDeck was selected for the boardwalk with a regular maintenance program. The finish was specified by the by Cairns Port Authority. The Project Manager was Thiess and the coating was applied by Prestige Painting.
